Guild Profile - National Capital Art Glass Guild
National Capital Art Glass Guild (NCAGG) was founded in 1978 as a community of artisans interested in stained glass. As the glass arts have expanded, the interests of members have grown to include all forms of glass art such as etching, fusing, beveling, and painting. Through meetings, workshops, and exhibitions, the NCAGG provides a forum for the exchange of ideas, experiences, and materials, and promotes in the community at large all aspects of glass as an art and craft. Through the year, guild members conduct classes in many glass techniques, present programs to interested schools and community groups. The NCAGG welcomes as members any who have an interest in glass art.
Our guild organizes several art shows and exhibitions for its members every year, both juried and all-member. The shows are held at local galleries and cultural institutions and give our members the opportunity to showcase their latest work and allow art lovers in our area to meet our artists and enjoy their work up close.
Community Involvement
Glass Arts Festival
This is a free one-day festival. It is the only one of its kind in the US and features demonstrations of a wide variety of art glass techniques used by our members. An activity is also provided for children. This event is held every other year and is sponsored by the NCAGG in cooperation with cultural institutions in our area. In the past the festival has been held at the Glen Echo Park, on the Potomac near Bethesda, MD with the cooperation of the Glen Echo Art Glass Consortium and the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture.
So Others Might Eat (SOME)
In the past many NCAGG members have donated various works of art at our shows with the proceeds benefiting S.O.M.E, a non-profit organization in Washington, DC that provides many valuable services for the area's elderly and homeless. Services include meals, clothes, shelter, training, counseling, rehabilitation, and health care.
"Art-Rageous" in Fairfax, VA
Fairfax County holds an annual arts festival, Spotlight on the Arts to support and encourage the awareness of cultural opportunities in the greater Fairfax community. The festival is considered one of Virginia's foremost arts festivals with music, dance, theater, visual arts etc. Several NCAGG members have participated to demonstrate stained glass windows and assist children with making fun plastic "stained glass" windows.
Elementary School Windows
Our guild has also been involved in exposing elementary school students to the art of stained glass. Members of NCAGG made and installed stained glass windows in their school, and the children were intricately involved in all construction aspects of the window, from the design to cutting glass to soldering.
