Guild Profile - High Country Basketry Guild

The High Country Basketry Guild (HCBG) was established in 1985 for people who are interested in baskets, whether making or collecting them. HCBG is an organization of approximately 70 basketmakers and professionals dedicated to preserve standards of excellence in the design and workmanship of basketry, and through education to promote public awareness of basketry as a craft and art, to give guidance to beginners and artisans alike, to establish a network for sharing topics of interest among members and non-members for any other legal purpose which promotes or develops basketry.  There are monthly meetings and/or workshops, classes taught by nationally-known weavers, and six newsletters per year. HCBG is a non-profit organization.  All earnings will be used for educational purposes, which may include workshops, classes, shows, demonstrations, mini-conventions, or other legally acceptable programs for its present and future members and the general public.

Individual guild members offer demonstrations and set up displays for organizations and associations in the area.  Most recently, we have taught a group of girl scouts, a free class, at a local library and demonstrated basketmaking at the Children’s Festival at Wolf Trap. Each year, members of the guild make small totes, fill with soaps, lotions, toothpaste and brushes, etc. and donate them to women’s shelters.  This past year, we made 50 totes.  The Knitters Guild donated 50 beautiful and unusual washcloths that we included in the totes. Many of our members have won significant basketmaking awards at national basketmaking conventions. All basketmakers or parties interested in the art of basketmaking shall be eligible to join, limited only by a minimum age of eighteen.
