Artist Statement

I first started turning over twenty years ago. My first project was a cocobolo mallet.  I started making pens in 2006.  Since then I have made over 200 pens, pencils and other turned projects.  I started pen making initially to make unique gifts for family and friends and quickly realized the enjoyment and pleasure of being a pen maker working with my hands and heart, to create artistic and useful objects out of some of the most beautiful materials in the world.

Every pen I make is designed and handcrafted one at a time in my studio on a wood lathe. Each pen is given over ten progressively finer sanding steps up to 12000-grit micromesh eliminating all scratches and sanding imperfections.  Then, a 2-step waxing finish is applied that provides protection and a deep glow to the finished pen.

I take great care and pride in each pen striving to meet exacting standards of excellence in design, implementation and finish creating a pen that provides great enjoyment and pleasure to its owner.

On the personal side, I have taught each of my four grandchildren how to make pens and appreciate the woods. A light touch and good concentration is needed to make quality products.  They are learning a craft that will stay with them and will enable them to pass on to their own children.
